On October 14,
15 and 16 Casper played host to 541 athletes, 34 Unified Sports®
Partners and 124 coaches participating in the 2009 Fall
Tournament. Featuring competition in Team and Individual
Skills Soccer, Singles and Doubles Bowling, Equestrian and Cycling,
the Fall Tournament continues to be the largest of the five Special
Olympics Wyoming state events.
The 541
athletes competing this year represent a 10% increase over
2008. While the biggest increase continues to be in the
number of bowling athletes, the 2009 Fall Tournament saw the
addition of two new Equestrian programs - Bear River Equestrian and
Game Creek Ranch from Jackson. The organization also
welcomed back Cody and Lander Valley programs and is excited to
welcome new participation from Sublette County.
Congratulations
to everyone who attended the 2009 Fall Tournament and a huge Thank
You to the sponsors and members of the Games Management Team who
volunteered their time and resources to deliver a great Fall
Tournament experience to the athletes, coaches and their families.

Project
UNIFY
Special
Olympics Project UNIFY's goal is to activate youth in an effort to
develop school communities where all young people are agents of
change, fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with
intellectual disabilities. To realize this goal, Project UNIFY
seeks to utilize existing programs and initiatives of Special
Olympics in combination with programs in the school community.
Project UNIFY has clear and defined characteristics: 1)
school-community collaborations; 2) inclusive programming; and 3)
youth empowerment and leadership. Other characteristics important
to the quality execution of our objectives include: sustaining
relationships among young people with and without ID, effective
communications, continuous improvement, and professional development.
Special
Olympics Wyoming's Young
Athlete Program is taking off across the state!
Counties that are now participating are Teton, Sublette, Lincoln,
Natrona, Campbell, Laramie and Goshen. A demonstration was
held at Fall Tournament where parents and therapists were able to
see the program in action and the comments were overwhelmingly
positive. A demonstration at The Learning Center in Jackson
with 15 pre-schoolers showing off their newly acquired skills was
also very well received. Families are using the kits at home and
therapists are enjoying the new activities in the classroom.
Special
Olympics Wyoming is encouraging high school students to get
involved in the Young Athlete Program through the Project Unify
Youth Activation. For more information the Young Athlete
Program or to register for a kit, please contact Dede McDonald PT,
DPT, PCS at dedmcdon@wyoming.com or (307)
413-4880.
Youth
Activation
Special
Olympics believes that through sports, young people can make a
difference in friendships, schools and communities.
As a global
movement, Special Olympics is focused on developing strategies to
promote school communities where all young people are agents of
change. The movement is engaging youth to promote Special Olympics
activities in their communities, communicating and networking via
web connectivity with other youth around the state, country and
globally reviewing materials for innovation and viability.
Wyoming hosted
a Youth Activation Summit in November
in Douglas. Over 40 students and mentors attended
and were Educated, Motivated and Activated to make a
difference in thier schools and communities. Look for schools
all over Wyoming to be facilitating Youth Activation rallies
in thier schools on or around March, 3, 2010!
