Special Olympics Wyoming
Young Athlete Program hit the ground running with its first Demonstration
Day held in Jackson. Teton County, Lincoln County and Sublette
County Young Athletes showed off their skills to an audience of
parents and friends and then finished with a friendly
competition maneuvering through an obstacle course. Special thanks
to Dede McDonald and all the volunteers who helped make this
possible. Thanks to the generous funding through the Daniels Fund
and Project Unify, the Young Athlete Program will be expanding
across the state with activity kits and guides available for
families. Please contact Dede McDonald for more information dedmcdon@wyoming.com or go to the Special
Olympics Wyoming website and look under programs to learn more about
our Future Stars!
Youth
Activation
Special Olympics believes
that through sports, young people can make a difference in
friendships, schools and communities.
As a global movement,
Special Olympics is focused on developing strategies to promote
school communities where all young people are agents of change. The
movement is engaging youth to promote Special Olympics activities
in their communities, communicating and networking via web
connectivity with other youth around the state, country and
globally reviewing materials for innovation and viability.
Wyoming will host a youth
activation summit October 23-24, 2009 in Douglas. High
Schools are encouraged to send a minimum of one athlete, peer and
chaperone/coach. All expenses will be covered. The summit
will kick-off with a presentation from two students that attended
the Global Youth Activation Summit (http://www.specialolympics.org/schools_and_youth.aspx). Interactive
sessions will follow with an opportunity for Wyoming youth to set
goals and priorities.
Project
UNIFY
Project
Unify - Special Olympics Project UNIFY's goal is to activate
youth in an effort to develop school communities where all young
people are agents of change, fostering respect, dignity and
advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities. To realize this
goal, Project UNIFY seeks to utilize existing programs and
initiatives of Special Olympics in combination with programs in the
school community. Project UNIFY has clear and defined
characteristics: 1) school-community collaborations; 2) inclusive
programming; and 3) youth empowerment and leadership. Other
characteristics important to the quality execution of our
objectives include: sustaining relationships among young people
with and without ID, effective communications, continuous
improvement, and professional development.
