What is Motor Activities Training Program (MATP)?
MATP is designed for athletes with disabilities who are unable to participate in Official Special Olympics sport competitions because of their skill and/or functional abilities. The focus of MATP is on individual training and participation rather than competition. The emphasis is on achieving personal bests and allows for adapted equipment and physical assistance.
Five Basic Motor Skills: MATP helps develop and enhance motor skills that are directly related to those used in official Special Olympics sports.
- Striking (a ball)
- Kicking (a ball)
- Manual Wheelchair Operation
- Motorized Wheelchair Operation
How athletes showcase their skills?
After an eight week training program is completed, a Challenge Day is offered that meets the needs of every participant and lets the athlete share their developed skills with family and friends. Instead of competition, there are skills stations where athletes are given the opportunity to demonstrate their personal best. Participants are awarded based on participation, not place.
