| At its most basic level, the Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and athletes run the “Flame of Hope” to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympics competitions, state/provincial Games, and National Summer or Winter Games. The Law Enforcement Torch Run® began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas (USA), Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. The Torch Run was quickly adopted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, now recognized as the founding law enforcement organization of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics. 1987 ~ Wyoming is represented at the Final Leg leading into the World Summer Games in South Bend, Indiana 1988 ~ The first run is organized in Wyoming bringing the Torch into the Summer Games in Cheyenne Since that time the Flame of Hope has been presented to Special Olympics Wyoming athletes at Summer Games in Sheridan, Laramie, Evanston and Gillette. 2007 ~ The Flame of Hope was carried more than 500 miles by 36 different agencies representing Law Enforcement from Gillette to the Special Olympics Wyoming Summer Games in Laramie. |

![]() Cops ‘n Jocks The Fraternal Order of Police and Special Olympics Wyoming have been long standing partners in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics. In 2006 an invitation was extended to include FOP on the statewide council and there’s been no looking back. The first year two FOP lodges in Casper, partnered up for a weekend collection event. Officers and Special Olympics athletes worked together and raised a phenomenal $17,183.69 in one weekend! They chose three intersections within a half mile of each other that included the entrance to the Eastridge Mall, Wal-Mart and Home Depot. The formula for success? The partnership! One officer said he’d never been involved in something so successful! Athletes loved ‘working’ with the police. The collection was done the weekend before Special Olympics Wyoming Summer Games and the kick off for the final leg run across the state. The 2007 event raised more than $20,000 from three communities! |
