Mission Statement – What We Do

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competition in
a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with mental disabilities, giving
them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience
joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other
Special Olympics athletes and the community.

volunteers, and our communities.

  1. Create and maintain stable, diverse, and reliable funding sources
    that allow for sustained growth
    1. Explore the feasibility of an endowment
    2. Diversify our grant sources
    3. Diversify into other markets
    4. Diversify into Cheyenne
    5. Pursue fundraising partnerships across the State
    6. Level out the income streams throughout the year
    7. Explore and obtain governmental funding
    8. Partner with other states and/or the International Games Committee
      for the ID games in 2009
    9. Explore partnerships with the Sports Industry

    the highest quality of the experiences.

    2. Institute quality control measures with all events

  1. Recruit and retain high quality volunteers, volunteer leaders, staff,
    and board members.
    1. Develop volunteer leader succession plans
    2. Provide volunteer training
    3. Monitor staff turnover
    4. Diversify and develop the Board
    5. Create and implement recognition programs for staff and volunteers
    6. Provide competitive wages and benefits for Staff
    7. Promote our Mission/Vision/Values

  1. Maintain our positive public image and grow awareness
    throughout the State.
    1. Conduct quality events that maintain our image
    2. Recognize and develop our donors
    3. Ensure that we have a PR component with every event
    4. Explore the need for a dedicated PR person and tie in with the
      National PR Program
    5. Conduct risk assessments with all events
    6. Maintain volunteer screening
    7. Access our Global Messenger Program
